  • Greener Kirkcaldy - Apple Day

    Created: 05/10/2017
    News/Events Category: Community Events

    When: 1.30pm-3.30pm, Saturday 28 October 2017
Where: Ravenscraig Walled Garden, Ravenscraig Street, Kirkcaldy
This event is being organised by Greener Kirkcaldy

It is too late to book a place for this particular session, sorry about that.

Join Greener Kirkcaldy in their community orchard at Ravenscraig Walled Garden for their annual Apple Day celebration. Every year the humble apple is celebrated up and down the country with events dedicated to showing the rich variety of apples that we grow in the UK, local varieties and their importance to our heritage. They'll have a fun packed afternoon of apple activities for all of the family. As usual, they'll be pressing apples to make apple juice - it would be great if people could bring their own apples along to make juice! They'll also be making apple themed things in their pizza oven like apple pie and baked apples. They'll be giving tours of their orchard (all of their fruit trees are Scottish and some varieties are very local) and Appletreeman, Andrew Lear, will also be offering advice and information on growing apples, including apple identification, troubleshooting and planning. They'll be running 3 apple-themed competitions for people to show off their skills, including Apple Cake, Apple Preserves and Apple Animals. Details can be found below. This is an open event - no need to book, just come along! You don't need to bring apples with you if you don't have them, they'll have plenty!

    Apple Competitions!

    • Apple Cake. Make your own apple cake - the judges will taste the cakes and decide which one they think is best - their decision is final! Cakes must contain apples, and must be homemade. Entrants should deliver their cakes to Ravenscraig Walled Garden between 11.00am and 12.00pm on Saturday 28 October. Cakes will not be accepted at any other time or place. Entrants will be asked to complete an entry form at that time.
    • Apple Preserves. Make your own jam, jelly syrup or other type of preserve - the judges will taste the preserves and decide which one they think is best - their decision is final! Preserves must contain apples, and must be homemade. Entrants should deliver their preserves to Ravenscraig Walled Garden between 11.00am and 12.00pm on Saturday 28th October. Preserves will not be accepted at any other time or place. Entrants will be asked to complete an entry form at that time.
    • Apple Animals. This competition is open to children up the age of 16 only. Entrants should design and make a model of an animal out of an apple (or more than one apple). Other resources are permitted, but the model should be made up of at least 50 percent apple. The model must be homemade and the work of the entrant. Models should be brought along on the day. The judges will consider all models and decide which one they think is best - their decision is final!
