The aim of this seminar is to build a solid understanding of the issues surrounding domestic abuse and child contact, providing the delegates with the confidence and knowledge to deal with the issue effectively in their work setting.
There will be a particular focus on court ordered contact. This seminar is particularly suitable for those supporting victims of domestic abuse and their children including Criminal Justice and Children & Families Social Work staff, Education, NHS Services, Police and Third Sector organisations including Fife Women's Aid, child and family support agencies and drug and alcohol support agencies.
Learning Outcomes -by the end of the session delegates will be able to:
understand the harm caused to children through domestic abuse, including how abuse may be continued through court proceedings and contact orders
understand an overview of the law and policy in Scotland in relation to child contact and domestic abuse
reflect on challenges and barriers within the current systems, including the gendered nature of 'professional dangerousness'
identify key principles for ensuring the rights, voice, and best interests of the child are central to decision making on contact in the context of domestic abuse
reflect on current practice through case studies
