Learning Disability Week 2023
Created: 02/06/2023Learning Disability Week 2023 will take place from the 19th to the 25th of June. Please see below the press release from Mencap UK:
"This year is all about busting myths about living life with a learning disability. For many people with a learning disability and their families, getting creative has been a way to stay connected and positive through the challenges of last year.
People with a learning disability are up to twice as likely to experience mental health problems, due to many factors like discrimination and social isolation.
Simple changes in hospital care can make a big difference better communication, more time and clearer information.
But we know the treatment people with a learning disability get in hospital is still not good enough in many parts of the country. This has to change.
If you’re a hospital worker, be the change by becoming a Treat me well Champion.
1,200 people with a learning disability die avoidably every year. And people with a learning disability die younger than the rest of the population by 17 years on average.
This has to change, and better hospital care is a huge part of this.
As a Treat me well Champion, you’ll get tailored information, access to training opportunities and campaigning resources to help you bring about change in your own hospitals.
You’ll have a chance to meet other hospital staff and people with a learning disability who want change locally and nationally.
We want hospital staff to understand the simple changes that make a big difference for people with a learning disability in hospital: more time, better communication and clearer information.
We’re also calling on the Government to make training on learning disability mandatory for hospital workers."
